Etiquette is a word that's often heard in relation to golf, more so than with any other sport. The love of the game, the understanding of the traditions and the respect for those with whom you play, all come together in the golf etiquette you exhibit on the course. If you are new to the game, or just need to brush up on your golf etiquette, here are some basic tips of the road that will help keep the game enjoyable for you and those around you.

Firstly, in Golfing Etiquette, Politeness Counts

  • Do not talk, move, or make a sound while a player is playing a shot.
  • Do not stand behind a player; rather stand on the right side of the tee.
  • Never get ahead of another player.
  • Do not stand, walk or cast a shadow in a player's putting line.
  • When it is your turn to play, be ready.
  • When finished putting, leave the green and mark your score on the next tee.
  • The player farthest from the pin plays first.
  • Repair your ball marks on the green, and replace your divots on the fairway, and rake bunker after use.
  • Take only one practice swing before hitting the ball.
  • Be careful players in front are out of range before hitting.
  • Shout "FORE" when someone is in danger of being hit.
  • Allow faster players to play through; if a hole opens in front of you, you are playing too slow.
  • Never improve your lie of the ball unless you are playing "winter rules".
  • When you are in a wrong fairway, give right-of-way to those playing in the proper fairway.
