Almost every area of life evolves its own specific terminology. Golf does too. Here are some terms I’ve picked at random. Next week there’ll be some more. Feel free to write back and add to the list if you think you have something to share.

Alloy            

A combination of metals; in golf refers to the material used to make club heads or shafts. Used as code for using a cheap metal for an expensive one.

Back Weight  

A weight (tungsten, brass or aluminum) attached to the back of wooden, graphite or titanium wood heads. Function: It shifts the center of gravity to the back of the club to help the ball get airborne.

Backspin       

Backward rotation of a golf ball in flight. It spins on a horizontal axis, caused by the club hitting the ball. Greater loft on a club and milling and brass blasting of club faces give greater backspin.

Balance Point

Where a shaft's weight is evenly distributed in both directions when rested on a single point.

Belly Putter   

Putter that positions the grip against the player's stomach, for a pendulum effect with a relatively stable pivot. Belly putters are about 40" in length and available in various lengths to suit all bellies.

Conforming Club   

A golf club that conforms to standards set by the USGA.

Gooseneck    

A putter (or iron) that has an extremely offset hosel.

Hosel  

The entry point of the shaft into the head on any golf club.

Loft   

The angle of the clubface that controls trajectory and affects distance.

Milled Face    

A club face milled to .001" for flatness to promote smoother roll.

Sole   

The bottom or underside of any type of golf club. It is where the club rests on the ground in playing position.

Trouble Club

Clubs used to play the ball from a difficult lie. Trouble clubs often have unusual sole construction - perhaps rails - that lower the center of gravity. Trouble clubs may be irons, woods or hybrids.

Volume         

The measurement of the size of a wood head as measured by liquid displacement.

Last week, we understood the value of a firm foundation for a good golf address. This week it’s time to understand the position the hips must take for a good swing.

Bend to sole club right, you’ll have to if your stance and posture is in the correct position.

Make sure: 

·         To bend from the hip (not the waist or bottom of the spine) to keep spine straight

·         Not to lock your knees as you bend

·         Your hips are parallel to the line the ball is intended to take, at address.

Hip Issues

If your hips are open at address, they could open too soon in the downswing, causing the ball to move right. However if your hips are closed at address, the club could swing too much from the inside and the ball could either move right or make you battle with a quick hook left.

Hip Tips to get your hips to work better for your game.

·         Ensure your hips are parallel to the flight line of the ball.

·         Your left hip moves an inch or two parallel to the target line

·         Next your left hip needs to turn backwards and out of the way

·         The club can then swing back to the inside after impact

To find out if your hips positioned right, check if your belt and shoulders are parallel to the ground, when you complete your swing. And if your belt buckle points to the intended target and your hips are level to the ground, you’re on you way to a great round.

Junior golfers are clued in and try new techniques freely to figure out what works for them. But all the same they need advice on what to try and what to absorb, when and how much.
